Urology Surgery Recovery Guide:
Everything in One Place

Universal rules that apply to every MenPower procedure, plus procedure-specific timelines, diet guidelines, warning signs, and the complete framework for recovering well in Korea or at home.

TL;DR

The single biggest recovery mistake foreign patients make is underestimating weeks 1–2. Swelling, discomfort, and temporary worsening of symptoms in the first 14 days are expected for most urological procedures — they are not signs of failure. This guide tells you exactly what to expect so that temporary normal healing does not cause unnecessary alarm or premature return to activity.

Post-Op Rules That Apply to Every MenPower Procedure

The First 72 Hours

R1

Hydration — 2.5–3 Litres Per Day

Adequate fluid intake is one of the most evidence-supported post-surgical recovery interventions. It reduces urinary tract infection risk, supports kidney function post-anaesthesia, and accelerates wound healing. Avoid caffeine (coffee, energy drinks, cola) and alcohol for the first 7 days as both impair wound healing and increase bleeding risk.

R2

Take Prescribed Medications — Complete Every Course

Antibiotics must be completed even if you feel well before the course ends. Stopping early is the primary cause of antibiotic-resistant post-surgical infection. NSAIDs (ibuprofen/naproxen) reduce inflammation and pain — take with food. Paracetamol/acetaminophen is safe to layer with NSAIDs at the correct doses.

R3

Rest — But Keep Moving

Bed rest beyond 24–48 hours is counterproductive for most urological procedures. Short walks (10–15 minutes, 2–3 times daily) from day 1–2 reduce DVT risk, speed wound healing, and improve bowel function. Do not interpret "rest" as immobility unless specifically instructed for your procedure.

R4

Scrotal Support — Wear It Consistently

For scrotal procedures (implant, vasectomy reversal, varicocele, TESE), wear the support garment provided continuously for 14 days including during sleep. Inadequate support allows dependent oedema to accumulate and significantly worsens pain and healing time.

R5

No Soaking Until Week 3

Showers are permitted from day 3 for most procedures — pat dry, do not rub. No baths, swimming pools, hot tubs, ocean, or sauna until wound is fully closed (typically week 3–4). Soaking introduces bacteria through healing epithelium and is a preventable cause of wound infection.

These are averages — individual clearance matters: Dr. Kwon issues individual activity clearance at each follow-up appointment based on wound healing status. The table above is a planning guide; your specific clearance may differ by 1–2 weeks in either direction depending on healing rate.

Post-Op Diet Guidelines

Eat — Healing Foods

  • Lean protein (chicken, fish, tofu, eggs) — tissue repair
  • Vitamin C foods (citrus, kiwi, capsicum) — collagen synthesis
  • Zinc-rich foods (pumpkin seeds, legumes) — wound healing
  • Fibre-rich foods — prevent constipation during opiate use
  • Warm Korean soups (설렁탕, 미역국) — easy to digest
  • Korean convenience store staples: triangle kimbap, banana milk, boiled eggs — accessible and appropriate

Limit During Recovery

  • Alcohol — impairs wound healing, increases bleeding risk
  • Caffeine — irritates bladder during urological recovery
  • Spicy food (weeks 1–2) — irritates bladder epithelium
  • High-sodium foods — increases oedema
  • Red meat in large quantities — harder to digest post-anaesthesia
  • Carbonated drinks — bladder irritant post-procedure

Supplements to Discuss with Dr. Kwon

  • Vitamin C 500mg/day — evidence base for wound healing
  • Zinc 25mg/day — deficiency common in post-op patients
  • Arnica Montana — some evidence for bruising reduction
  • Bromelain (pineapple enzyme) — anti-inflammatory post-implant
  • Avoid fish oil, vitamin E, garlic supplements — increase bleeding time
  • Stop aspirin/ibuprofen as blood thinners 7 days pre-op (prescribed NSAIDs OK)
